Intermediate

Once you have gained experience at the Foundation level you are advised to take the next step up, the Intermediate course and examination, leading to the Intermediate licence (and callsign).

The Intermediate licence gives access to a range of Amateur Radio band allocations with a permitted (maximum) power level of 50 watts (not on all bands).

To obtain the Intermediate licence it is advisable to take a training course. Courses and examinations are regularly offered by Carrickfergus Amateur Radio Group over a period of Tuesday evenings at the Club venue. This course is longer than the Foundation course and teaches many of the fundamentals of radio in a stimulating way by undertaking practical tasks such as soldering, small projects, and a variety of other exercises building on the experience you have gained as a Foundation licence holder.

After completing the course candidates sit the Intermediate Licence Examination. This examination is multiple-choice based on the Intermediate syllabus, covering a range of concepts, including radio operation, licence conditions, propagation, safety, and technical competence.

Once completed and passed, the Intermediate pass certificate enables you to obtain a '2xxxxx' callsign and permits you to proceed to the Advanced level course. You are encouraged to use your Intermediate training to proceed to the Advanced level course.
